Based off the short story Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption by Stephen King, the film revolves around Andy Dufrense (Tim Robbins), a banker sent to the tough Shawshank Prison after murdering his wife and her lover, despite claiming to be innocence. During his time, at the prison he befriends a fellow inmate called Red (Morgan Freeman), and ends up being protected by the guards after the warden starts using him in his money-laundering operation. The film was a box-office flop, but was critically acclaimed and was nominated for seven Oscars.
